1 Thread Harness Muslin
Brocade cloth in which every thread in the warp is controlled by the jacquard. Very similar to book harness muslin, but finer in construction and of better quality. The figuring is developed from coarse weft woven pick and pick with the ground. The floating weft is cut away. Many beautiful effects are produced by the combination of gauze stripes and plain stripes with figure. A typical example is made with 64 ends and 60 picks per inch, 64's warp, 52's weft, 10's figuring wefts.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Thread Harness Muslin

2 Thread Fabric
Plain woven, very strong, heavy cotton fabrics, made with ply warp and single weft, the picks of weft being placed very far apart. The fabric is used for foundation for tyres. -
3 Dressed Warp
A warp that previous to placing in the loom, has been prepared by evenly distributing the threads and placing a uniform tension on each thread (see warps) -
4 Linen Thread Counting
Frequently the number of threads of warp and weft are counted by the inch glass, but other sizes are used. In the Scottish industry the " shotting " is given in various ways. The more commonly used are the 37/200-in and the 37/40-in. glasses. Sometimes the 37/80-in. glass is used.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Linen Thread Counting

13 Healds
This is a term applied to looped cords which are furnished with an eye in the centre and employed in looms for controlling the up and down movements of the warp threads. In the majority of cases there is a separate heald eye for each warp thread, and those healds which lift in the same manner are threaded on the same stave except in those cases where that would make the healds too crowded. In such cases the healds are divided on two or three shafts which may be tied together to lift as one if weaving conditions permit. Healds are formed by a knitting machine which is set to form the required number of heald eyes per inch on each stave, or in the case of spaced healds with the heald eyes arranged in the desired order on the stave. The yarns used may be cotton or worsted (see Hea'd Yarns). In knitted healds the eye is usually formed from the same yarn as the rest of the heald, but healds can be made with metal eyes. Metal healds are made of twisted wire galvanised or treated to be rustless, and formed with an eye in the centre for the warp thread and elongated upper and lower eyes for threading on flat steel bars that are secured to the heald staves proper at the top and bottom. Such healds are usually of the sliding type and eliminate the need for healds knit to pattern. Wire healds are also combined with knitting to give a prescribed number of eyes per inch. -
14 Binding
When two separate fabrics are woven together in the loom and are to be joined, the process is termed binding. Any thread which is used to bind or hold these two cloths together is termed a binding thread. This can be done by lifting a warp thread from the back cloth, over a face cloth pick, and lifting the face cloth threads on each side. Another method is to use an extra warp which weaves under the back cloth picks and over the face cloth picks, and is thus so covered, that it is not seen. -
15 Doups
Special healds used in the manufacture of gauze and leno fabrics. A doup consists of an ordinary heald termed the " front standard " and a half heald with only one stave termed the " doup heald." The half heald may be at the bottom or the top. In the case of the bottom doup, the twine of the doup heald passes over the eye of the front standard and returns through it. The crossing thread is drawn through the loop so formed, and also through an additional heald termed the back standard. To form the cross-shed the whole of the doup is raised, namely, the front standard and half heald. To form the open shed, i.e., when the crossing thread is on the other side of the standard end, the back standard is lifted, the front standard heald is left down, but the half heald is lifted to allow the warp thread to cross to the other side of the standard warp end (see gauze cloth and design). -
